The Acai palm is a very large palm tree that you only see in Central and South America. It is found primarily in the Amazon Rain Forests of Brazil, but has been seen almost as far north as Mexico. This tree is the only tree that you can produce the famous Acai berry that has been made so popular by Oprah, Fox News, and Rachael Ray.

Aside from the fruit, the stem is also used by the locals to make salads. The Acai fruit is about the size of a grape and is produced on branches of about 700-900 berries. The fruit is produced and harvested twice a year, and depending what time of the year it is, it will have a different look and feel to it. The Fall harvest is the one that is used by us in the United States. The berry is extremely juicy and also produces a seed that can be smashed up and used as an antioxidant booster. The Spring harvest is still used by locals in Brazil, but we do not use this juice. It is much more sour and has a green color.

Aside from just using the berry, the tree also has other uses. The branches and leaves are used to make hats, baskets, and even used to build houses in the area. If the seeds are not smashed up, they can be used to plant and grow more Acai palm trees.

As you can see, the Acai palm tree is a very valuable commodity to not only Americans, but also extremely important to the local Brazilians.
